How to prepare Mopani root before use

Before adding Mopani root to your aquarium or terrarium, it is important to prepare it properly to minimize the release of tannins (which can discolor the water) and remove surface dirt. Here is a quick guide:

1. Soaking : Soak the Mopani root in a container of water, ideally for 1-2 weeks. This soaking helps to release tannins that can cause the water to turn brown. Change the water in the container regularly for best results. If the roots continue to release a lot of tannins, you can extend this step.

2. By boiling (optional): To speed up the process, you can boil the root for 1-2 hours. Boiling removes tannins more effectively and also disinfects the roots, which is especially useful when using the roots in aquariums with sensitive fish.

3. Final rinse : After soaking or boiling, rinse the root thoroughly with clean water. Make sure there is no residue left on it.
